Biblical Context
Joseph had two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, who were adopted by their grandfather Jacob as his own. Though the younger, Ephraim was blessed with prominence over his brother Manasseh and became the leading tribe of the Northern kingdom. Thus, the Tribe of Joseph is more often called the Tribe of Ephraim and/or Manasseh.
